WORLD BEE DAY

ABOUT WORLD BEE DAY

World Bee Day is an annual international event.  We celebrate World Bee Day in Hilo to help beekeepers network, educate the community about the importance of pollinators in Hawaii and to have fun.  World Bee Day is supported by volunteers in the community.

THE WORLD BEES

We all depend on the survival of honey bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly under threat from human activities. Pollination is, however, a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity. To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day.

PROTECT
BEES

On World Bee Day, it's crucial to highlight the vital role bees play in our ecosystem and food production. Bees are essential pollinators, responsible for fertilizing many of the crops we rely on for food. However, bee populations worldwide are facing threats from habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and disease. Protecting bees isn't just about safeguarding their populations; it's about ensuring the sustainability of our agriculture and the security of our global food supply. By promoting bee-friendly practices, such as reducing pesticide use, preserving habitats, and supporting beekeeping initiatives, we can help protect these crucial pollinators and safeguard the future of our planet.

SUPPORT LOCAL BEE KEEPERS

World Bee Day is all about promoting awareness of the crucial role that bees play in our ecosystem. One way to do that is to purchase honey locally, supporting the bees themselves, as well as local farmers and their crops. The benefits of buying local go beyond just supporting bee populations; it also helps to reduce carbon emissions from transportation and ensures that we have access to fresh, high-quality food. Join us in spreading the word about the importance of supporting local ecosystems and small businesses by purchasing honey from local beekeepers.
